Chickens communicate with more than 24 vocalisations, each with a distinct meaning, including warning their friends about different types of predators or letting their mothers know whether they’re comfortable.

Daily Tasks

Keeping chickens is very low maintenance. There are just a few jobs which need to be carried out daily to ensure you have happy, healthy chickens.

Each morning I let my hens out as soon as possible. This exposes them to as much daylight and helps keep egg production up. I’ll briefly look over them as they burst out of the coop and they should generally look bright eyed, tail up and begin strutting around or scratching away searching for food.

Daily checklist:

  • Put a fresh supply of feed out for your chickens
  • Provide a fresh supply of water
  • Collect the eggs
  • Remove the chicken poo from the coop
  • Take a quick look at them to check they are looking healthy and alert
